ladies, get in line...

the other day, out of nowhere, finn said to me, "mom, when i grow up and get married, i'm going to make dinner every single night instead of my wife."
how sweet.
was this because he saw my joy in cooking and wanted to copy it?  perhaps, it was because he saw my lack of joy and wanted to be helpful to his wife someday...  either way, what a sweet boy to want to be the man of the house making dinner every night.

"and i'm going to make mac and cheese.  every. single. night."
oh.
i guess it had nothing to do with me, except that i won't make him kraft mac n cheese...
so, if there is a lucky girl out there who loves mac n cheese just as much as this guy, in 30 years, he's your man.

already being asked out to play

who me?
on mlk day my kids had school.  the whole neighborhood was running around in the street playing and enjoying the beautiful weather and they were at school.  oh, well.  they were none the wiser.
several kids knocked on the door to see if my kiddos were around to play.  i sent away many a sad and dejected door knocker.  as if the courage they got up to knock on our door was for nothing.
at one point the little boy across the street (who cracks me up on a daily basis, i might add) came to see if lucy or finn were available to play (and, yes, he always asks if they are "available").  i told him, sorry but all my kids were at school.  "all of your kids?" he asked, "even dot?"  "well, no, she's here. did you want to play with her," i asked jokingly.  "oh, yes," he quickly responded, "if you just want to bring her outside on a blanket with some toys, i would love to play with her."  unfortunately she was actually napping, i had to explain, since i did not actually think he was interested in playing with her.  who knew?
funny stuff.

times long past

i can't say 2013 has gotten off to the best start for me...  have you ever had the experience when you are tickling a baby and they aren't quite sure if they want to laugh hysterically or burst into tears?  that's kind of how i've felt for the last couple weeks.  however, no one wants to read a "poor me" post, so let's look back to times long past.  and, by times long past, i mean the wonderful holiday season that went by way too quickly (it isn't really "long past" but it feels that way, plus i wanted to use that phrase, auld lang syne and all...).  so, here is our holiday good times in a nutshell...  and, by a nutshell i mean an excessive number of pictures (mostly from my phone, as i hardly remember i own a camera any more these days... gonna change that this year)...

we got out all our christmas and advent treasures...

i took the vdm nativity picture with one cute little green wise man...

we went ice skating and enjoyed our festive downtown...

we went out in search of christmas lights for st. lucy's feast day...

we endured another christmas pageant...

we had a wonderful grown-up family christmas dinner...

we went ice skating again with our cousins...

we found the perfect christmas tree...

and went home to decorate it...

finn still hasn't quite figured out proper spacing of ornaments...

we visited "the santa house"...

we made gingerbread houses with our friends...

lucy wrote lots of little notes to the family...

we played a whole lot of catan (and initiated finn into the obsession)...

we made a silly christmas video for g.g. and grandad...

we got all dressed up on christmas eve and went to grandma sherrick's for dinner and then off to mass...

dot got super excited and couldn't go to bed waiting for santa to come...

santa did come and he brought a teddy bear...

a football helmet...

a bike...

and a catcher's glove...

and on new year's eve we took a bike ride over to gg and grandad's and hung out in their jacuzzi...

that night we played disney scene it and set off fireworks in the street...

and, of course, made our usual oreo cake...

merry christmas and happy new year!
here's to hoping 2013 takes a turn for the better...

a month later...

so, last month i took some 6 month pictures of little miss dot.
i was sure i would get them posted.
i didn't.
and, now she is 7 months old.
what a slacker i am.
so, for those interested, here is what dot looked like one month ago.

she still loves her little tongue...

so, let's go thru the checklist...
she is still super tiny.  not doctor's-are-worried tiny, but tiny.
she scoots/army crawls all around the house.
she gets up on hands and knees and crawls just once before deciding the army crawl is way more efficient.*  (she is kind of an efficiency expert).
she sits.
she tries to pull herself up on everything and is decently successful, much to the disappointment of the rest of us.  it seems nothing is out of her reach these days.
she nurses in quick little snacks.  no more than 5 minutes all day long, whenever she feels like it.  super efficient.
she hardly sleeps.  short little naps, twice a day if we are lucky. clearly, she doesn't want to miss a minute of the excitement this family has to offer.  no being lazy for this little lady.  she is literally (said like chris traeger) a little ball of energy.  buddy the elf.  i'm not kidding.
oh, and she just got 2 front teeth...
(by "just" i mean 1 month ago)

when dot is really happy she gives huge mouth-opened smiles. (see fig.1)
sometimes i don't think it is physically possible for her to open her mouth any wider. (see fig.2)
then she does. (see fig.3)

and, i have to mention her baby.
she has this silly little baby doll that she got from her great grandma sherrick and it is her favorite thing in the world. (after me, of course)
she carries it around with her.  drags it around while she crawls (either in her hand or her mouth).  likes to suck on it's pigtails.  and will attempt to dive out of your arms if you walk by it on the floor while holding her.  and thanks to the dragging on the floor/sucking on it, it resembles a doggy chew toy.  it gets washed every couple days and really only looks halfway decent for the first hour out of the dryer.

and, of course, she likes to babble/talk/yell at us all the time...

i think she thinks she is in charge around here.

*based on last month, i kind of thought she might be crawling by now, but she is still a fan of the army crawl.  she gets up on her hands and knees and then sits herself up and is so pleased with herself she just stays there.  fine by me.  i am all for her slowing down a bit.
