lucia

i have this amazing and dear friend named lucia who lives with her family in dallas.
(you may have noticed her mentioned on this blog before).
well, she happens to be one of those people with perfect taste.
she also has this innate ability to make any space beautiful.
even our dark, dingy, disgusting college apartment was made brighter and more stylish thanks to her.
thus, i was ever so excited to find photos of her home gracing the internet this morning.
(although a little surge of jealousy ran through me first, as i long to sit in her home with her family catching up on life over a cup of coffee or a lovely meal...)
i could probably go on and on about lucia and her family, but i won't just now.
take a peak at the rest of her home here.
(thanks, joslyn.  and sorry if i felt some jealousy towards you for a brief moment today...)

oh, and a very happy birthday, mr. simek.

when you were mine

when i was maybe in 1st or 2nd grade my dad took us to a music store in park central.  the walls were lined with those funky shelves you could stick cassette tapes into (remember those huge plastic security cases they would be in so sometimes you couldn't even read what songs were on an album?).  anyway, he bought me cyndi lauper's she's so unusual.  i think i listened to that tape over a thousand times.  i can remember laying on the floor in my sister erin's room listening to side A until it was over and i would flip it over and listen to side B and then back again to side A.  it makes me laugh to think of jack having any interest whatsoever to listen to music like that.  i guess i had the older sister influence.  erin had a whole drawer full of cassettes.  our favorites were the ones she wasn't actually allowed to have like who's that girl and the dirty dancing soundtrack (note: i did not see dirty dancing as a kid, we simply enjoyed music).  basically anything erin did was super cool in my book, so finally owning my own tape was just about the best thing ever.  i remember just staring at the one tiny picture on the front and treasuring it like my number one prized possession.  my rambling is leading somewhere...
danny just made me a cd of the band crooked fingers.  (i depend on my little brother for all new music suggestions).  a couple months ago he played me a song by them and to my sweet surprise it was a cover of the song when you were mine by cyndi lauper from the aforementioned album (yes, i know it is originally by prince, but that doesn't go with my story and, yes, i am sure crooked fingers would be insulted that i consider it a cyndi lauper cover...  oh, well).  since now having the song in my possession i have become unhealthily obsessed with it.  so, for your listening pleasure....

i also thoroughly enjoyed this little note as i do love to play the same song over and over and over again, as i obviously have been lately.

lucy and finn

this has lucy written all over it...

sometimes i find finn dressed up and all set up on a chair or bed or couch with books or toys or something to occupy him.
i always ask what he's doing and he always answers, "lucy did this."
she is a crafty one, taking her time to get him situated and, thus, happily out of her way.
reminds me a bit of certain mary taber and her little brother...

lucy has also taken to trying to teach finn to read.
everything she learns, she comes home and, in a very authoritative manner, attempts to explain it to finn.
thus, finn has taken to slowly saying words.  listening for their sounds and guessing what letter they start with.
last week as he was doing this he came up to me and said, "mom, listen.  walk.  like go for a walk.  wu-wu-wu-walk.  it starts with 'w'.  and ride.  like ride your bike.  (which sounded like "wide")  wu-wu-wu-wide.  they both start with 'w'!"  he was too proud, i couldn't correct him...  he has time to learn, right?

and my last little story about finn and lucy that i have to remember, is bony chin.
the other morning all our kids came piling into our bed and pete and i were trying to ignore them and keep sleeping.  all of a sudden finn says, "i'm going to bony chin you!" and digs his bony little chin into my back.  lucy's shrill laughter exploded out of her mouth immediately and she started doing the same thing to pete.  apparently, it was a game they had made up a few days before.  they think it is hilarious.

and while i am thinking of it, a few weeks back i told finn we were going to go somewhere and he did not want to leave what he was doing.  he told me just to go and he would stay here, finish his puzzle and wait for me to get back.  i reminded him that he cannot stay home by himself.  with all the seriousness in the world he told me, "but remember that time that you and lucy were gone and dad left me and jack home and went to the movie store?"  i really hoped knew this couldn't be true, so i said, "i don't think that happened, finn."  he was adamant that it had.  "yes.  dad went and got that gum ball movie."  ahh, now i understand.  "no, finn, he just walked across the street to borrow it from the musselmanns.  you really are not allowed to stay home by yourself."  he looked very defeated, but went to put his shoes on.

soccer

well, lucy is playing soccer this year and as with most things that involve lucy, it makes me laugh every time i think about it.  she's loved it so much.  she's loved being on a team, having her very own uniform, practicing with her friends after school, and every saturday morning she is up bright and early and excited for her game.  she runs up and down the field following the crowd with all the enthusiasm in the world.  she just doesn't have any of the needed aggression to actually get close to the ball.  she seems just fine with that.  last week i asked her after her game if she kicked the ball at all.  she answered, "i think i might have touched it twice."

(i love the above picture because even though i can't see lucy's face, i can tell she's laughing.  something funny audrey did is my guess...)

(i think the two kids in the back are hugging during the game...)

gus

we are so excited about the newest little cousin on my side of the family.
mr. augustine "gus" william weisse was born october 24th and he is just about as cute as a baby could ever be...

finn is absolutely in love.  all he wants to do is hold gus, look at gus, touch gus, talk about gus...  perhaps we should just let lucy and jimmy run off and let these two be good buddies...

just for me

"If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging."
— Diane Loomans

i think i want to frame this somewhere in my home as a constant reminder.
time goes too fast, so i want to enjoy every minute i can.

boxing at the duce

when finn saw the boxing ring he said in an almost whisper of a voice, "just like rocky."
he was more than a little excited to tell jack all about it...
so, check out the duce if you haven't already.
i have no comments on their organization and service...  but it definitely is a very cool place.
so, get a milkshake from the soda fountain, sit on the bleachers and watch some old looney tunes.
sounds like a lovely afternoon to me...
