"it's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got"

lucky me.  i get to have both.
as we were drawing this afternoon, jack looked up and said, "this is such a fun day!"  and that's all we were doing, just sitting around drawing and eating snacks (his snack was a three hour old grilled cheese to be exact, which he excitedly said, "thank you soooo much!" for... its the little things, really).  what a mighty fine day, indeed.

happy friday.  hope everyone has a lovely weekend with those they love the most...

spilled milk

a few days ago finn was over at my dad's house eating dinner.  he didn't seem to be doing so well with the actual eating, as he was being a little picky and rather distracted.  my dad told him he at least had to finish his milk (which is funny because finn never drinks milk at home, he is usually water only... but baabee was trying to be a good and firm caretaker).  finn said he didn't want to finish his milk.  baabee said he had to, so finn just sat there.  baabee walked back into the kitchen and stopped paying attention to finn, when aunt erin said, out of the corner of her eye, she saw finn reach one little finger out and tip over his milk on the table.  baabee came to clean it up and asked finn if he had done it on purpose.  "mmmmhhhhmmm," said finn.  "did you do it because you didn't want to drink it?" baabee inquired further.  "mmmmhhhmmm," replied finn again.  and then, "sorry," with really no remorse whatsoever.  oh, finn.  what will we do with you...

three eggs a day

from our own backyard...

so, although i still am not completely fond of our smelly, creepy, feathery chickens, i do have to say there is something rather lovely about sending your kids out to the backyard to gather eggs and make them for your breakfast.  jack and lucy are good little caretakers and finn loves running along to "help" with (or torment) the chickens and pete cleans the coop, so i really can't complain about the whole set-up.  even if they do creep me out a bit...
now we just need to convince finn that eggs are tasty.

can i please go to bed?

lucy seems to ask this question on a semi-regular basis.  she is our only kid who realizes when she is tired and wants to go to bed (the boys both seem to jump at the opportunity to stay up and try desperately to deny ever being tired).  and when lucy decides its time - its time that very second.

a couple of weeks ago we were eating dinner at pete's parents and only about 10 minutes into dinner she came up to me and whispered, "i'm tired, can i go to sleep on the couch."  which she did, and slept through the next 2 hours of dining and adult conversation all around her.  then the other night, she came walking in from playing with her brothers and said, "can i please go to bed?"  pete quickly answered, "nope."  her face almost sunk before pete quickly assured her that he was joking and, of course, she could go to bed.  our sweet little goose.  she definitely always knows what she wants...

conversations overheard...

a few things from the past weeks (ok, maybe even months... its been a while)...

- "my favorite star wars movie is when 'the umpire strikes out'."  - finn
- "let's pretend we're brother and sister and our mom and dad died..."  - any given kid, any day of the week.  apparently this is a popular theme...
- from the toilet: "what do you want to play after i wipe this?"  - lucy
- at christmastime, jack's school had a can drive that he was very serious about.  he asked if we could buy thousands of cans.  i told him no.  he thought about it for a minute, then replied, "if we use all our money to buy cans, then we'll be poor.  then people will just give us cans.  so we should just buy as many cans as we want because it won't matter if we spend all our money."
- i asked lucy what she wanted to get her brothers for christmas.  "hmmmm...  finn really wants polar bears and i think jack really wants cans."  (clearly he didn't let the can thing go for a while...).
- "i will only be wendy if peter pan and wendy can get married."  - lucy
- lucy asked finn, "who do you want to marry?" while showing him a selection of apparent choices, to which finn replied, "probably this girl because she has blue hair.  and i love blue hair."
- finn, trying to get out of having to go to church, said, "but i don't want a donut, so i don't have to go to church."  after having it explained to him, that either way he was going, it was whether or not he was good that determined his donut standings, he said, "fine.  i'll have a donut."
- very mad (imagine an adult so upset they are swearing) lucy slammed her fist on the table and said, "darnit! barnit! malarnit!"  (sounded more like, "dawnit! bawnit! malawnit!).
- jack came across a holy card with the novena to st. jude on it and asked me who the picture on it was.  i assumed it was st. jude, considering the prayer on the back, and told him that is who it was.  he said, "no, i don't think so."  "who do you think it is?" i asked.  "i don't know, but not st. jude," he told me.  "i'm fairly sure that's who it is, jack."  "maaaa-om! (read this like an annoyed teenager and continue that annoyance through the rest of this statement) it. just. doesn't. look. like. st. jude!"  so, i couldn't help but ask, "how do you know what st. jude looks like?"  and, with a complete change of emotion, jack nonchalantly said, "that's true."  and that was the end of our discussion.
- finn walked into the playroom last week and said, "jack, sorry i said i didn't like you."  "you didn't say that," replied jack.  "i said it to lucy, " admitted finn.

(finn shaking his groove thing at the rock-n-roll marathon...  because it felt boring with no pictures).

oh, how i love the rain.

and it just keeps coming.  in phoenix, rain is quite the novelty, so we are simply loving it.  playing outside in it 'til we're drenched, then coming in for some cozy snuggly time on the couch.  i even just got a phone call that school is cancelled because of it.  have you ever heard of such a thing?  aahhh, its all so dreamy...

we picked jack up from school and he got immediately in on the fun.  there was a perfect little ocean on the side of our house for playmobils and their little boats.  i think jack was out there for the next three hours...

what a lovely sign of a lovely day...

is it asking too much to want another day just like this tomorrow?

gourmet pop tarts?

after discussing the fact that you can no longer seem to find brown sugar cinnamon pop tarts without the frosting anymore (and if you live somewhere that you can still find these, we need to talk about you sending me a box...), christine and i decided we should go ahead and attempt making our own little version of them.  they oozed a little while baking and were more flaky than hard like actual pop tarts, but man, oh, man were they good...

i think basically anything you make with this buttery, flaky crust would be delicious actually...

and if you would like to make this delicious tart crust yourself, head on over to pots and peter pans to see how...

potty talk...

finn to me, last night while sitting on the toilet: "mom, will you just push my belly and make the peepee come out?"

and it is always important to have your pan pipes, dagger and blue slug bug close at hand...

of few of my favorite things...

i had a rather nice christmas myself...
am currently trying to learn the many functions of my new camera (hurray!), so here are a few of my favorite things while i practice...

a little something to spark some culinary inspiration...

and because i am a big dork, i was insanely excited over this industrial size baker's twine...

what the kids picked out for me while shopping with pete...

new slippers, jeans and sweater from my sweet mother-in-law (not sure what i wore before i owned this sweater...  i wonder if pete is sick of the fact that i wear it every day...)

and once i figure out the gazillion buttons and functions on my camera, i get to dig into the manual for this (and, still like a big dork, i am super excited)...

my other favorite present i received was date money and a babysitter.
could a present get any better than that?

a few of their favorite things...

finn got the football field he had been dreaming of...

jack and lucy both got playmobil sets as they had hoped...

legos...

kit kittredge...

lots of new books...

all sorts of new supplies to keep lucy drawing, gluing and stickering for hours...

new blocks...

the most fabulous barn for the whole family...

and a blue slug bug (that had also been up there on finn's list)...

we were pretty spoiled this year...  but we have been having lots of fun with our new toys...

p.s. as i was having several camera and computer issues again just before christmas, but still attempted to blog, all my blog attempts have now decided they will post for me on the days i made said attempts.  for anyone interested in our christmas happenings or just looking to kill 20 minutes, feel free to scroll down a ways to discover some hidden posts...
