advent chain

we started the tradition of an advent chain when jack was little as simply a way to count down the days to christmas.  the tradition has grown and changed over the years.  this year we did one chain (as opposed to the year i made jack and lucy each their own, which was twice as much work and no practice in taking turns...) and each day the chain would say something they had to or got to do.  anything from a prayer to a small sacrifice to a treat to something big like getting our christmas tree.  it is one of my favorite traditions we do.  i love how excited the kids get even when it says to clean out their toys and give some things away.  of course, making hot chocolate and eating cookies after school is all the more exciting...

(smoking santa from my grandmother's house - my very favorite since i was a little girl)

last year, g.g. gave the kids this advent elf with 24 pockets to fill with little trinkets for each day leading to christmas.  obviously, they love it.  and it looks mighty cute on our wall, as well.  this year we were also given a lego advent calendar.  we are serious about counting down our days in this house, apparently.  and you should have seen the morning ritual it created.  i'm not lying when i say we were late to school on more than one occasion because of all this advent counting...
