my birthday...

well, yesterday was my birthday. today i am 29. one year shy of thirty. crazy stuff. i think it would be fun to write one of these lists (i do love lists) of the 29 things i want to do before i turn 30... we will see if that ever happens, but it could be fun. i am not someone to freak out about another birthday, and i am not trying to comment on being or feeling "old". it is just kind of crazy to me how fleeting time really is. jack starts 1st grade tomorrow. that is even crazier than my birthday, but all about the same thing. time goes by too fast. thus, i think a list could be fun. a list to really keep you focused on enjoying every minute. we'll see...

anyway, i did have a wonderful and spoiling day. my sister erin showed up at 7:30 with my favorite iced coffee (all i really ever want for my birthday...). then we went out to breakfast at the original pancake house with my whole family. later my sisters and i took lucy to run an errand to michael's and then ate lunch at deluxe (after which i thought i might explode... eating out two meals in a row is intense...). hung out the rest of the afternoon. pudge stopped by with this book that maisie had remembered i had wanted. too thoughtful. finally, christine hosted the most lovely and intimate of dinner parties. too kind, too fun. it was a wonderful birthday.

as a side note, lucy had been asking all day if she could make a pie. she wanted to make it all by herself with absolutely no help. i should have gone to the store and bought a ready made pie crust, but as time was limited i just gave her some fruit to cut up and a pie pan. she cut up all the fruit and spread it in the pan, then spread whipped cream all over the top. she was quite pleased with herself, i must say...
and here is a sample of lulu's crustless fruit pie. i think these are really going to take off in the culinary world...

scenes from a simply lovely dinner party...

dessert was the most heavenly panna cotta with the most to-die-for presentation. come on, how cute is that little jar? and the homemade cookies? once again, christine outdid herself. she even danced for me with her second bump while singing happy birthday. talk about an amazing hostess... and that's me devouring my delicious dessert...
so, i now get to look forward to ten months of pete remarking on what an old lady i am and how very young he is... he tells me its just going to get worse every year. oh, well. i was just looking at that picture of myself and as far as i can tell i look just like i did for the entire 28th year of my life, but that doesn't stop pete for an excuse to tease...

Weekend Trip Journal - Balboa: Day 3 - Happy Birthday, Sara!

our last day in balboa was sara's birthday, so we all woke up and headed straight to the beach at corona del mar. i picked up starbucks and bev got breakfast burritos and we had a picnic breakfast on the beach. as soon as we got there we spotted some dolphins, so the kids (namely finn) enjoyed watching them the rest of the morning. breakfast burritos and dolphins? was this for sara's birthday or finn's? i don't think i could plan a more perfect day in finn's world. i guess it was the starbucks and dolphins that were more for sara...

sam didn't want to be in the picture, so i just took one of him standing by himself a few feet away...

for those who don't know, finn is obsessed with dolphins. he has a toy dolphin that he adores and he and jack could watch animal planet and discovery channel shows on the ocean all day. for the last few months he has been big on the fact that he wants to swim with dolphins. ("i going to wear goggles and jump off a boat and swim with dolphins and touch them.") we saw disney's earth a while back and have shown the kids a few episodes of planet earth, all of which end with a sequence on how they filmed the animals. after seeing this, finn told me, "i want to be that guy that takes pictures on animal planet. i going to jump off the boat with my camera." needless to say, finn just stood by this rock watching the dolphins for a very long time...

the older kids made up a game in which they would run out and touch this rock and then run back before the waves got them. they had a few huge waves sneak up on them a couple times...

i think i could watch kids play in the sand all day...

overkill on the dolphin pictures? i had so many more, folks. this was narrowing it down for me...

so long, pacific ocean. until next summer...

Weekend Trip Journal - Balboa: Day 2 - oh, flea market, how i adore thee...

this is finn's donut that he ate on the way to the long beach flea market... or at least, partially ate. i guess we know why he loves donuts...

so, sunday morning after the wedding lucy, finn and i joined bev, laurie and paige for an outing to the long beach flea market. if i lived in california i think i would go to one of their flea markets every single weekend. i absolutely love them. i adore them... oh, how i adore them. next time you are in california hit one up. it will not disappoint. so much to look at even if you don't buy a thing...
the junk jewelry table was a big hit with my kids. lucy made out with some free items since the lady kept giving her stuff. she said she had a four year old granddaughter in mexico that she never gets to see. she seemed very excited to dig up anything pink for lucy. so sweet.
finn really wanted this watch with a football chain, but i talked him out of it. $5 seemed a bit much...
my one purchase was a fabulous old letter press type drawer that we hope to hang and keep little trinkets in... lucy started before we left the flea market.
ah, a day well spent...

lists, prayers and some good old wrestling

as i am obsessed with lists, thus my influence has rubbed off on jack who also now loves putting in written form the things he wishes to accomplish. last night after dinner he asked if we could make a list of all the things he wants to do before he goes back to school. i let everyone say two things, so now we have a list of 6 things to accomplish before next tuesday. jack wants to go to arcadia park and have an "uncle danny day", lucy wants to finish our robots (slacker mom, i know) and play disney scene-it with uncle danny and finn wants to go to the zoo ("and see giraffes, zebras and da elephant") and play cars and smurfs with jack (and my list: make lunch for teachers at jack's school on friday and try to throw together a back-to-school dinner for jack... inspiration here). not too bad of a list (except for my stuff...). to start we will be off to the zoo this morning so as to start by scratching off one of the grander items on our list. now i just need to get danny on board with his part in all this...

the other night during prayers i had to bite my lip as both lucy and jack said their intentions. jack prayed that our chicks would all learn to live together and get along... nice, i guess, but something about praying for chickens just seems a little funny to me. then my kids always like to pray for everyone we know who is having (or trying to have) a baby. so, after this intention lucy asked, "when is mimi going to have a baby?" to which i told her, "she already had a baby. michael, remember?" which apparently wasn't good enough because she then said, "but michael is so old... isn't she ever going to have another baby?" not sure if mimi would be flattered or horrified by this...

finally, nothing says time to wrestle like matching jammies...

poor sam looks like he doesn't know what to do with this crazy cousin of his...

when sam tired of this silliness, finn decided to go for martin. one of the many plusses of being part of a big family... there is always someone to wrestle with...
i realize this post is a little long and a little rambly (is that a word? oh well, i'm using it...), but i just had to share one more thing that made me laugh. on our drive to california we stopped at a love's station to get gas and use the restroom. as lucy hopped out of the car she gasped and exclaimed, "oh, mom! look at those beautiful hearts!"

who knew love's was such an exciting place for a potty stop. kids do have a way of making you look at things differently...
more from our california trip tomorrow...
