#5 - Junk Robots

try as i did, i still ended up being a bit of a slacker. here is my number five idea, but it is incomplete. we will have to post more pictures next week. we got so far as collecting the garbage and gluing it together, but we still plan to paint and decorate them. as an added bonus i will point you to another fun project for kids involving discarded household items, garbage from the recycling bin and any general junk you might find. these people threw stuff in a box over the course of several months and then pulled it all out one day and let their kids create whatever they came up with. fun with a hot glue gun always makes for good times...

Vacation Journal - Balboa: July 10th, Farewell, Ocean

so, like the crazy person that i am, i decided to drive all of my kids and our cousin luke up to l.a. for an afternoon of wandering around and exploring the old farmers' market. my sister erin and her friends, caitlin and joe and their sweet baby aiden, met us there as well. none of the kids seemed to mind the drive or the traffic and once luke got his car sickness over and done with, all went well. i highly recommend visiting this place if you are ever in the area...

you can buy any and all cuts of meat here, including chicken feet, which the kids were all fascinated with...

we also discovered the most fabulous sticker store. literally wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling stickers of anything and everything you could imagine.

all the kids picked out a sticker set and had fun decorating paper bags with them...

below would be the bridge where jack saw derek jeter and his mean old mom doubted him. i definitely thought it looked like him, but by the time jack got to me, he was so far away and seemed much smaller than i thought he should be. he was absolutely blinged out and had a very lovely lady on his arm, however. pete later informed me that the yankees were in town playing the angels and they had a night game that day, so it was more than likely for derek jeter to be somewhere out on the town at that time of day. jack is positive, without a doubt, that it was him. and i will now stand by that as well...

and then back to the beach for our last day all together...

we miss you all already. until next year...

Happy birthday, G.G. and Aunt Mary!

happy birthday, ladies! we love you both!

lucy is off on a girls' day with mimi and the boys and i are trying to find something fun at home to take the place of a mimi outing... not sure there is anything here to replace that, but perhaps a "setup" or something will at least distract them...
happy friday.

#4 - Hopscotch

painter's tape on the floor. perfect.

Vacation Journal - Balboa: Summer 2009 - Baseball and Fashion Island

a big part of our time at the beach this year was spent playing baseball. there were games with as few as three people all the way up to almost everyone joining in. sometimes just batting practice, other times full on games. jack was in heaven, obviously. i don't think he understood when people would want to take a break or do something else for a little bit. if he had it his way, i think he would have done this from morning til night with maybe a little jump in the ocean to cool off or a break for something to eat... but then right back at it. luckily, several of his cousins seem to be of this same vein, so there was always someone around to play with.

a stop my kids always want to make when we are visiting balboa is fashion island. it is basically just a big outdoor mall, but they have this huge fish pond that my kids love to run around (and, occasionally fall in. lucy fell completely in last year under pete's watch and finn dunked one foot, shoe and all, in this year...). this time around grandad even treated for a ride on the carousel, so it made it all the more exciting. for some reason lucy chose the creepiest animal to ride on, but she was happy with it, so oh, well...

al's shoulders seemed to be the coveted seat this year for all kids 7 and under. what a good sport. even when finn decides to hold on to his face...

can you see finn's neck in this picture? a horrible lady, clueless as can be, walking her dogs on the beach, took finn out with her dog leash straight across his neck. good thing g.g. wasn't there because that lady might have been punched...

#3 - Go Camping

camping in the living room. we set up a tent in our living room and it is huge. it takes up the entire room. jack and lucy have slept in this tent for four nights now. they read books, play spy, take naps and hang out in here during the day. lucy, of course, insisted on bringing the laundry basket in so she could change her clothes in there as well. it was awfully cozy all snuggling up in there to read books by flashlight. and then being able to have running water, a toilet and air conditioning all at your immediate disposal...

the following pictures were taken for lili, audrey and kateri. not really sure why... my kids just asked if they could take pictures to send them and these were the poses they struck...

Vacation Journal - Balboa: July 6 thru 9

the whole week was back and forth between the big beach and diamond street. of course, the older kids had their annual lemonade stand...

almost every afternoon we would play at the big beach until the sun went down. my kids were usually hard to drag in from the ocean and near impossible to get out of the sand...

Happy Birthday, Uncle Brian! who celebrated his birthday on July 7th at the beach house...

wednesday night g.g. had put together a little stitching party for all the little girls with their own individual pouches of embroidery thread, needles, mini embroidery hoops and tea towels to put their initials on. that g.g., always up to something creative...

sam, george and finn all had so much fun together. running around, wrestling, laughing... laying face down in the sand. one night they got into a full-on wrestle match with grandad. even lucy and luke ended up joining in. what a good sport grandad is to have all those kids all over him...

and more beach. and more sand. and more ocean. ah, yes, it was a wonderful week...
