Happy Birthday, Pete!

happy birthday to my wonderful, amazing, charming husband who, for two short months, will be the same age as his old lady of a wife (he actually calls me "old lady" all the time... has since high school...). he deserves a little "husband gushing" since it is his birthday. i mean, who else could look this sexy in knickers...

oh, do i love my husband. very much, indeed.

father's day (a little late...)

i just had to share this picture of my beautiful family looking ever so bright and cheery on father's day morning...

i swear, it wasn't that bad... at least i don't think it was... well, if nothing else, finn enjoyed it.

perhaps a bigger smile was put on pete's face when i gave him a homemade bloody mary and some absolutely hysterical cards and artwork made by the kids...

all in all, i would say father's day was wonderful and relaxing. i should write the pga and tell them thank you for scheduling the us open on father's day, so i don't have to try and come up with anything to do other than provide food and drinks and a couch for my husband to lounge on while viewing... oh, and what a wonderful father he is, indeed.

one of those days...

this morning i was feeling a little overwhelmed and my patience was gone. i was being a bit harsher on my kids than i like to be (and always, of course, feel bad about in retrospect). i was ranting about something as i leaned over the seat to buckle finn in and i when i stood back up lucy said, "uh, mom..."
"what?!" (as in, "what could it possibly be now?")
she just pointed at me.
i looked down at my shirt.
a piece of jelly toast was stuck to me. jelly-side to my white shirt.
right.
God always seems to throw those little reminders at you to slow down and settle down.

and i must say, God certainly has a sense of humor about it all...

our new pool toys

after much begging, we finally allowed our kids to take the ducks in the pool. the ducks and the kids seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. except when they were kind of chasing lucy on the pool noodle and she slightly freaked out...

and two more makes four...

somehow we went from no pets to 4 pets in a matter of a few days...

i must say, the kids are loving it. i have become rather fond of our little ducklings as well. names are still up for debate. lucy has allowed her brothers to have their names for the chicks if one of the ducks can be sally. finn is insisting on donald and daisy. i suggested ping, but have yet to get any takers. and jack is still thinking about it. jack has actually really taken to having pets. he checks on them constantly, changes their water repeatedly throughout the day, cleans their dishes and generally just hangs out with them. i think it has been a very good lesson in responsibility for him. we'll see if the charm wears off anytime soon...

miss krista's farm

this is my kids new favorite place to go. krista was so kind as to let us come over twice last week (and even kinder to give my kids two of their baby ducks) and i think, if she would let us, we would all move in with her. her home is somewhat of a treasure. and who wouldn't feel welcome with that cute face at the door...

sorry pete, but...

while driving passed a lovely house this morning with a beautiful green lawn jack said, "i want wet, smudgy grass i can lay in. you know, soft grass. not pokey. i don't want burrs and weeds and shamrocks... well, i like shamrocks... just not instead of grass."

are we terrible parents or what?

sleepy lulu

this morning lucy slept in and when she finally woke up we were in a bit of a hurry to get out the door, so i just swept through her hair with my fingers and pulled it into two messy little pigtails, "ahhh," she said, "i like that finger comb so much better than my regular brush." you can find the "finger comb" on the same aisle as the human hands that you lay on your sleeping baby...

our first pets

so, believe it or not, pete finally allowed the kids to get pets. remember how jack's class hatched chicks this spring... well, two of them came home with us much to our kids great excitement. for those who do not know, pete is strictly against pets on the grounds that they do not serve a purpose. thus, pets that will lay fresh eggs everyday were able to slide by under the lack of purpose problem. for pete, fresh eggs is an excellent purpose. and our kids are obsessed with them. first thing in the morning they run to find their shoes and head out to check on our chicks and usually end up hanging out in the chicken coup for a good half hour or so, until i force them inside for breakfast. when breakfast is done, they head right back out again. they feed them, bring them water, make sure they have shade, etc. (which is lucky for me since anything with feathers kind of creeps me out just a tad...). pete, with the help of baabee, built a chicken coup in our backyard and so far everything has run smoothly regarding our new little pets... so far...

the only real problem we have run into is that we only have two chicks and each of our three kids has a very strong opinion about a name they wish to use. finn seems to have won out on his (he seems to be the most adamant and the most stubborn), with lightning mcqueen being the yellow chick. he has at least agreed to calling her "queenie" for short. jack is set on henrietta and lucy has yet to concede either of her two names, sally and polly, to agree on either of the boys' names. as far as i know chickens never really learn to respond to their names, so the kids can just go ahead and call them whatever they want...

summer sundays

in the summer, sundays feel the way i wish they would all year. they are relaxing, laid-back and never-ending. you don't feel the stress of getting everything done that you need to in order to be ready for the week. you aren't rushed to get kids to bed so they can get up early for school the next morning. the sun seems to stick around just a bit longer. everything else in life seems like it can wait. you can just be with family and enjoy it for what it was always intended to be. so, while june is my favorite month, i am going to declare sundays my favorite day in june.

joe's farm grill

this may be one of my very favorite places to go eat with the kids. bummer that it is in gilbert, but it is well worth the drive every now and then. it is in the original farm house of joe's family and the main dining room is their old living room. there are tons of picnic tables outside and it is a fabulous place to go with kids. there is a cute little coffee shop, nursery (for plants, not kids) and produce stand (all of which is grown on the "farm" that is part of the agritopia community) right next door. i highly recommend it. the menu is a little intense, but i absolutely love their bbq pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. finn could not get enough of the sweet potato fries... or the dip.

pete ordered deep fried green beans (nothing i would ever thought to have order) that were smothered in garlic and insanely delicious.

i am telling everyone to go check it out one of these days if they get a chance...

finn's new teeth

remember these old broken beauties...

finn now has lovely little caps on his front teeth. while the experience did not seem to phase him at all, it was more than traumatic for me. but it is all over now and finn is enjoying showing off his pearly whites...
