"moonie"

this is finn's word for movie. not sure why, but it really makes me laugh.

mardi gras

happy fat tuesday to everyone. my kids had way too much fun today. lots of play, no naps and eventual meltdowns for everyone... still was a good time and everyone went to bed early and passed out immediately. it will be good for all of us to have a mellow ash wednesday tomorrow...

jack and lucy have both decided to give up candy for lent, which, although they don't really eat candy, is a sweet thought in terms of trying to give something up. i guess it will make easter that much more exciting when it feels like they have been going without something... pete was also explaining to them trying to work on something as opposed to just giving something up. jack thought about this and decided he is also going to work on getting up in a timely fashion without complaining when it is time to get up for school. i thought this was really sweet since he thought of it all on his own and since he genuinely really does have a hard time getting up in the morning. finn is still thinking about what he is going to give up...

raw sugar

yesterday morning at palatte i got a cappuccino and jack asked if the foam on top was whipped cream. i said no, it was just mild and proceeded to pour a packet of raw sugar into my drink. the sugar just kind of sat on the foam and jack said, "mmm, can i have some of that?" i was stirring it into my coffee and assured him that he would not like it, it really was just coffee with foamy milk on top. to which jack replied, "no, i mean will you rip open one of those packets and pour it into my mouth."

silhouettes

(so, i messed up a little on the picture above and made finn's head bigger than the rest... it really isn't that big, i swear...)

another fun project i did with my kids last week was to make these cute little silhouette prints. i took a profile picture of each of them and then had them developed at costco. we/i cut them out (as my kids watched eagerly) and my initial plan was to trace them and then cut them out again on black paper. however, i also happened to have black acrylic paint on hand, so i decided to just try painting them. it was so easy. also, i was talking to my sister who suggested using spray paint, so that might be a better way to go. i was going for what i had on hand... plus, kids and spray paint was not something i was willing to venture into. i have not decided exactly where to hang them yet, but i just think they look so sweet. i love how much they really look like each of my kids. on finn's i couldn't quite figure out how to cut around all that chicken fuzz in the back, so i ended up just smoothing around it. plus, i considered cutting around the drool hanging off his chin in the picture, but ultimately decided to lose that as well. it was a fun, easy project and my vain kids love anything involving pictures of themselves...

kids' journals

our kids have been obsessed with playing school at home lately. they have turned our entire playroom into their classroom and, although they prefer mom or dad to be the teacher, they will take turns "teaching" one another. on friday they wanted to go to the store to buy notebooks for their classroom, so i suggested our craft project for playing school could be making little journals. it was quite successful all around. my kids get very excited about craft projects, it was easy and we used what we had on hand and they have been using them excessively in their never-ending games of school. all we used was a brown paper bag, some white computer paper and twine. i am thinking of making myself a little one, too...

spring!

when we moved into this house tesfaye planted jack an apple tree and lucy a peach tree (and then also planted a plum tree... he must have foreseen finn...). jack and lucy love claiming the ownership of their individual trees and are very excited to see them already blooming this year. there is just something about blooms on fruit trees that is so happy. i love this time of year when our kids are constantly outside and everything looks so green and fresh.

jack's apple tree blooms... hopefully the neighbor kids will stop tearing off the flowers, so we can have some apples...

finn's poor little plum tree is trying to catch up...

new blocks

i am not sure why i was so initially drawn to these blocks, but i have been seeing them for a couple years and never bought them because they are kind of expensive and they ultimately were just blocks. then i happened upon them at safeway (of all places?) just after christmas and they were marked down from $25 for one box to $6. i took this as a sign and bought them. my kids absolutely love them (ok, i do, too...) and for some reason build such cool stuff with them. they seem like the simplest blocks, but there is something about their simplicity that allows so much you can do with them.

this is jack's most recent design (ok, i helped a little)...

i searched them online and made the mistake of showing jack some of these insane creations people have made with them...

newsies

ever since we let jack see the movie newsies, he has been somewhat of a dancing fool. i actually have to say to him before we go into the grocery store, "jack, you cannot dance all over the aisles because you will knock something over or run into someone" (which has happened before...). when we were in california the kids were all playing in one of those fountains where the water shoots up from the ground and, although it started as just running away from the water, jack couldn't help himself but break into a little dance... he's our own billy elliot...

valentine's day

i saw these on another blog (the crafty crow) and decided to make them with the kids. they are little matchboxes with construction paper glued around the outside and then decorated to your liking. they were a huge hit to make and the kids loved delivering them to all the neighbor kids. my favorite ones are the ones that lucy drew pictures of her friends on... we stuffed them with candy hearts and m&m's. good times.

"mommy, look at me!"

this is finn's recent phrase of choice... anytime he does anything i hear him shouting, "mommy, look at me!" he might be standing on a chair or holding two handles on kitchen cupboards or balancing on one foot or laying on the floor. i hear "mommy, look at me!" all day long. i kind of love it...
finn is my only kid to always say mommy whenever he talks to me. "hi, mommy." "bye, mommy." the sweetest is, "thank you, mommy" but there is also "watch out, mommy" which makes me giggle...

2 point safety

this is jack's football field that santa brought two christmases ago and which gets a ton of playtime during football season. i get all the play-by-plays from jack in extremely specific details. ever since the super bowl this year every single game has included a safety...

stratego

jack is completely obsessed with playing games. all games, any games. he is constantly asking for someone to play with him and is eager to jump at the opportunity to ask all guests that come to our house. he still, however, has some issues with losing... but he tries...
when we were in california he became particularly obsessed with the game stratego and could not stop asking pete to play it with him. they played several games and after losing all of them, jack started harassing me to play with him instead. jack has always had this idea that i am stupid, or at least less good than him at everything (when he was two we were playing baseball and he told me, nevermind he would play with dad later because i was a "stinky" pitcher...). anyway, i also beat him and he very disappointedly blinked back tears. when we came back to california a few weeks later, he was back to it, wanting to play stratego as much as possible. the first game he played against me, he won and practically exploded through the ceiling. i have seriously never seen him so excited in my life. i am talking better than christmas morning. he immediately asked if he could call dad to tell him. christine couldn't stop laughing at how similar this was to pete when he was a kid. she started telling me about how obsessed pete was with games and how he would always beg her to play with him. she would often times get bored or distracted and not want to finish the game, which absolutely drove pete mad. he would insist that there had to be a winner. then we started laughing at how similar jack and lucy are to pete and christine. i think christine especially related to lucy after our 6 hour drive to california took a bit longer due to lucy's excessive bathroom breaks...

only drink names...

so, i just overheard our kids playing in the next room and they had divvied up a pile of people and were making up a story to play. finn said his guy's name was mr. coke, to which jack and lucy both fell over laughing. thus, starting a theme of all the people having "drink names" as designated by jack. there was mr. beer, mr. apple juice, mr. lemonade (or lemlanade, as lucy calls it...), all of which were met with hysterical laughter. the list continued. mr. milk, mr. chocolate milk, mr. vitamin water... vitamin water? i swear, kids pay attention to everything...

happy friday!

please excuse finn's whining in the background, but lucy really wanted me to post this video of her. man, she's so vain...

3 sick kids....

emily sent me the email below this morning at work. although i honestly felt terrible for her, i have to admit i laughed. and further, the girl next to me in my office is 3 months pregnant with her first kid and she is very excited - so i let her read this as well.....emily thought i was a horrible person for "bursting her bubble", but oh well.....here it is....

"so, i thought i should let you know that i quit. i am done. indulge me for one minute while i give you a rundown of my morning. i decide we need to go to the grocery store since we are slowly running out of food and to feed ones family is a good thing, along with the fact that fussy mr. finn perked up at the idea of going somewhere. off we go. lucy and finn manage to BOTH throw up at the grocery store. i am already there so i just grab the few things i have left to get and race home. once home, jack really wanted to help put the groceries away, so i said he could. i didn't realize that this meant chucking stuff up onto the shelves of the fridge that he cannot reach. so, up goes the yogurt into my bottle of salad dressing which knocks into the glass of coffee (that i was looking forward to enjoying later, by the way...) and now my entire fridge is covered in cold coffee and balsamic dressing. everything. it spilled from the top shelf down the entire back, in every drawer and underneath the bottom drawers. it was in cracks i couldn't even get to. now, i am trying to finish making breakfast, clean out the fridge and put the groceries away. in my frustration (i realize i have no one to blame, but myself for this, but still...) i slam the bottle of ketchup on the counter and the top flies open and my entire face gets sprayed. i had ketchup on my eyelashes even. i quickly wipe off my face, finish cleaning the fridge and put the rest of the groceries away, all the while lucy is telling me finn has "poopy". when i am done i go to take care of finn to find that his poo has leaked all over the floor because i took his pants off (which he threw up on at the grocery store) when we got home, so he is straight diaper to floor with lovely treats oozing out the side. i change his diaper while he is screaming at me, nurse him lay him down for a nap and now finally have a chance to take a breath. so, i quit. and if you won't let me quit, you may want to fire me because i might have accidentally said shit when the coffee spilled all over the fridge..."

jammies

finn is obsessed with his pajamas. it is usually a fight to get him out of them, so unless i really need to, i have just given into letting him wear them. a couple weeks ago we compromised nice pants, jammie shirt and a sweater to go to church.

now, with most of my kids being slightly under the weather it has been an all out pajama-fest and i fear we have created monsters. lucy said the other day, "remember that one day when dad wore his pajamas all day? (that being christmas...) i want to do that." and jack spilled something on his pajamas yesterday and opted for changing into more pajamas. i think we really need to get out of the house...

we never know what she's thinking...

i was sitting in the rocking chair yesterday with mr. finn who was not feeling so great. lucy walks in and with this squinty-eyed smile puts her hand on my cheek and says, "aren't you just the cutest thing?" i asked her what she was talking about or what game she was playing and she just simply replied, with her still cheesy smile, "you're just the cutest thing." i don't know where she comes up with this stuff.

jack cried.

that's right. the cardinals lost and jack cried. the second the game ended i looked over at him and could see him blinking back tears. i put my hand on his shoulder and was about to say, "it's ok," but the second my hand touched him it all came pouring out. so, after talking about how great they played and that they are still the nfc champions and that it is just a fact of life that your team can't always win, i put him to bed. then pete came home, plopped down on the couch and just about started to cry... i don't remember signing up for this...

super bowl sunday

since it is now officially sunday i will start it off with yet another Go Cardinals! and if it isn't too much to ask, please, please, please bring home a super bowl win... i will have a very sad household otherwise...

now i just need to remember to wake pete up in an hour and 15 minutes to watch the federer vs. nadal match...
