vacation in your own town

this saturday poured rain. i mean really poured. there was even horrible, loud thunder to go with it. it was lovely. needless to say, that put an end to all yard work we had planned... i had picked up a culture pass to the art museum (a much pleasanter experience this time... walked in and there it was for me) a few days before, so we decided it would be a perfect rainy day activity. we headed downtown and stopped by lola's (a relatively new coffee shop) and had some coffee and read the paper. i started to feel like i was on vacation. looking out the window at the gray, cloudy day and the light rail passing by (still a novelty to see), sitting in a coffee shop just relaxing and reading the paper, not rushed or moving on to the next errand. it was perfect. then we headed down to the phoenix art museum where we met up with the speier family (there had been a culture pass waiting for them, as well). we spent over two hours playing in the children's room, admiring the miniatures collection, answering questions about st. john the baptist's decapitated head, wondering why babies look so creepy in portraits, listening to different little interpretations of paintings (my favorite was finn's take on an abstract painting, "it's a mean face! a mean, witch's face!") and wandering through the firefly exhibit several times in a row before hunger pangs hit and we headed off through the sculpture garden to get the kids some lunch. it was a lovely day. i highly recommend excusing yourself from household duties and taking a little vacation in your own town...

Yum. I love Lola's! Their home made whipped cream is swoon-worthy.

about the creepy babies - were they old pictures? In victorian times it was common to paint a picture of a deceased infant in memory of that infant but they always came out looking a little ghostly.
