so long, farewell

saturday morning we headed down to pratt's and said goodbye to our rooster (who had been waking us at progressively earlier hours every day... i think it was 5:00 on saturday...). the kids disappointment vanished quickly when pete told them we could get two new chicks. jack was really hoping for the cute little fluffy yellow ones, but we opted for two adolescents since we can start keeping them outside immediately (the little ones need to be inside in a temperature controlled environment of some kind) and they will give us eggs sooner. pete took the rooster in and started talking to the guy about what kind of chickens we would get in return as the kids and i admired the rest of the livestock. pratt's is kind of like a fabulous petting zoo. it would be a great field trip for preschool age kids. all three of my kids think it is fantastic. when we came upon the cage of roosters, where ours had already been deposited, finn became really excited and, pointing to our rooster, said, "we have that same rooster at home!" i guess he missed the part about us trading him in...

finn's favorite were the little potbelly pigs. he thought it was hysterical to stick his hands through the gate and let them smoosh their noses against his fingers...

and finn must have asked at least 7 times if he could touch the tortoises despite the sign that said no touching. "can i just touch their shell?" "that part of their shell?" "how about right there?"

(jack stands just like pete...)

finn insisted on carrying the basket of chickens to the car by himself. poor chickens...
(yes, there are really chickens in that side-ways cage...)

we also decided it was time to say adios to our smelly old ducks. they were fun while we had them, but without a pond i really just started feeling sorry for them (not to mention, pato poo is no bueno...). so we let them go at the biltmore pond where they found a nice family of white ducks to try and bond with. we have already gone back to visit them...

Do those Biltmore residents know you're depositing your unwanted pets in their exclusive community?
