on being a single mom...

this weekend pete took jack to flagstaff to watch the cardinals practice at their summer training camp and go golfing in some nicer weather. this left me, lucy and finn on our own. we seem to get along just fine when left to ourselves, but there is one outing that stresses me out completely when flying solo with the kids... church. it just never seems to go smoothly when you are trying to get everyone ready, there on time and quiet for the hour. i was doing rather well and we were right on time when finn decided to tell me as we were walking out the door that he had "poopy." so back inside we go. as i am changing him he decides to kick his leg at me and get poo on my skirt. i finish changing him, dispose of the diaper, wash my hands, change my clothes, get the kids in the car and off we go. we get to church 5 minutes late, but miraculously it hasn't started yet (fr. john likes to give people a hard time for showing up late, but then start late because so many people do show up late, only to punish those who were there on time... a little backwards, but we benefitted from it this week... kind of). the opening song begins and i notice finn has been squatting quietly on the floor since we got there. after a few more minutes, lucy informs me, "mom, finn has poo. i just smelled him." i verify that this is true, which it is, and it is no slight smell (sorry to all those sitting near us). so i take both kids back to the bathroom, change finn, make lucy go while we are there also (to avoid a second trip), get drinks of water and hurry back to our seats. only to discover they are no longer our seats. and there are no seats left. somehow in the five minutes we were gone the church that was about 75% full became a completely packed house. a kind usher, apparently having noticed the whole ordeal offered to squeeze us in next to him in the "reserved for ushers" pew. finally we were in seats and ready to listen. miraculously the rest of mass went (relatively) well with not much more than an excessive request for donuts on finn's behalf. however, the entire ordeal completely wore me out. after mass we rushed past everyone we knew talking outside, drove thru dunkin donuts (by the way, i just tried their iced latte for the first time and must say it was mighty tasty and half the price of most coffee places...) and went straight home to collapse on the couch. i cannot imagine having to do this every sunday. it definitely gives me a new perspective on some of the things my mom had to deal with...
