b.s.

so pete decided to teach jack and his cousin peter how to play the game b.s. last weekend with grandad.  jack, as is standard whenever he learns a new game, became obsessed with playing it.  the next day he came in and asked me, "mom, do you know what b.s. stands for?" in a way that implied he did know and it wasn't appropriate.  i said no and he said, "you don't?!!" sounding shocked as if he knew something i didn't.  i was getting a little nervous and asked him what it meant.  his tone immediately changed and he said, "i don't know."  (phew!)  his tone changed again as he said, "i wonder what it stands for?... hmmm, b.s.?  hmmm... bus?  it could stand for bus... but that doesn't really make sense...  i'll just go ask dad."  outta my hands.  so, my advice would be, if you are going to teach your child this game, perhaps try and come up with an altogether different name for it...

we learned the game as "I Doubt It"... so of course we were made fun of in college for not knowing the "true" name. But at least it's more appropriate for kids.
