back to balboa on a whim

so, christine called me friday afternoon to see if i had any interest in driving to california and we were gone by 6:00 that night. it was one of those things i probably never would have done if i had thought about it for very long, so to do it on a whim and just go was fabulous. all things considered, the drive went well (thanks christine for dealing with all of our bathroom breaks...). our first morning there jack woke up and with a big stretch, in a very grown up sort of way, says to me, "aahh, man, it was so nice to sleep by myself (lucy tends to crawl into bed with him at home). lucy usually just talks and talks and talks and then when she is finally asleep i'm like 'phew,' *snore*. huh, ya know?" i had to bite my lip not to laugh, thinking, who is this little five year old talking to me so grown-up and where is my little boy? anyway, we had a grand time with lots of walks, lots of coffee and a decent amount of sewing. ruby seemed thrilled every single morning to still be at the beach and played endlessly on the floor with my motley crew. she even picked up the word "car" while we were there, probably from the excessive amount of time spent playing cars with finn. finn's favorite game that he picked up from either lucy or jack was asking what every single street sign said. he used to always just say "name" when he wanted to know what something was called, but it evolved into "what name says" while we were at the beach. so as we approached each and every street sign we would hear, "what name says, what name says, what name says" coming from the stroller. then he would repeat whatever it was, coral, onyx, ruby... the best was that he learned g.g.'s house was on diamond, so he would get super excited when we would reach that street sign. late one night i asked him where g.g. lived and, being slightly hyper, he kept repeating, "g.g. on diamond. g.g. by diamond." miss katie was also able to join us for a quick two day, one night visit. lucy was especially glad to see her and as we were pulling into the airport lucy shouted from the back seat, "whoever spies miss katie gets to give her a hug first!" i think lucy hardly left miss katie's side for the 36 hours she was there. here they are feigning sleep together...

a few pics from the beach... finn finally got over his fear of the sand and i convinced him to take his shoes off after he walked into the water with them on. ruby loved the beach just like lucy did at that age... so stinkin' cute.

poor lucy always looks like cousin it when i am trying to snap candid shots... i should really try to convince her to let me pull her hair back more often...

and guess who took making sand castles slightly serious...
