"guy"

this is one of finn's favorite words. it refers to any man any where. quite often we are standing in line at the grocery store and finn points in the face of a man behind us and loudly announces, "Guy!" i guess it doesn't sound that embarrassing, but in the moment it always is... also, any little toy is "guy." army men: guys. little people: guys. playmobils: guys. "guy." it will be sad when that goes away...

family pictures

we have never had a family picture. we have a handful of photos of pete and i with jack (2003-2004). i do not believe any with pete, myself, jack and lucy (2005-2006). and one with all five of us from my birthday two years ago in which lucy is smiling with her face all scrunched up and finn looks terrified, like he is trying to flip off my lap (2007). and some of you may remember our attempt this summer at the beach... anyway, i finally convinced pete to let us go take some pictures, with my dad as acting photographer. we got a couple funny ones, but the rest came out slightly out of focus (not blaming, of course, because i know my camera is a bit complicated...) i took a couple of cute ones of the kids, so all in all it was not a wasted effort. however, someday i will actually convince my husband to let us hire an actual photographer... just thought i would share a few...

the first few are blurry, but you get the idea...

pixar's cars

so, finn is completely obsessed with the characters from the movie cars. between a few clips from the movie, a coloring book, a picture book and the toys (ok, and an occasional youtube "life is a highway" video...) he cannot get enough. he knows almost all the cars names (my favorite being how he says luigi and guido) and could be quite content playing with them all day. we have the song "life is a highway" on an old cd from when jack loved it (although jack and lucy still do love it), so i dug it up the other day for finn. big mistake. now every time we get in the car, my little broken record from the back seat starts in with, "highway, highway, highway." and he won't let up until i turn it on. today he passed out in the car listening to it and when we got home i was carrying him inside and he started to fuss a little with his eyes still closed saying, "highway." i think we have created a monster.

two more "lucy-isms"

one of lucy's new things is to tell you that she is not doing or going to do something. she tries to say, "i am not." however, what she actually says is, "i amn't."
the other day we were talking about getting exercise by going on a walk or bike ride. lucy commented that she loves getting "extra-size" and that her favorite "extra-size" is riding her bike.
that's all.

more from jimmy's birthday...

in old school taber style, baabee made a foam core cutout for picture taking at the party (this was a common event at taber birthday's growing up... an indian canoe, an airplane, a 50's convertible... you get the point). anyway, just wanted to share a few...

"c'mere, c'mere"

this is finn's new favorite saying. and with it's discovery it is hard to get him to go anywhere or do anything without me in tow...
on a different note, i have really been wanting to take more pictures on my nice camera. i have been lazy, always using the little one to snap photos here and there, but since halloween i have really wanted to play around with my slr camera some more. since lucy and jack like to run for the hills whenever i get it out, i was only able to take a few of finn. but then he started with his "c'mere, c'mere" and we were off to ride bumper cars together... if anyone wants some pictures of their kiddos, i am feeling creative... and sadly that probably won't last long...

and, yes, he still drools like a maniac...

also, to join "c'mere, c'mere" is "c'mon, c'mon"

"please pass the gramote"

this is lucy's way of saying "remote." and instead of gymnastics, lucy takes a "joonmastics" class. and here are a few more funny sayings of late.
- on october 23, we had tickets to a suns' preseason game, so we decided to take all the kids. it was finn's first game and jack and lucy were very excited (all three kids sported their suns' jerseys). the entire first quarter finn sat on my lap wide-eyed, staring at the game and clapping and yelling "yeah!" whenever the rest of the crowd cheered. by the second quarter he realized there was a lot more to look at, so he started moving around, looking at the posters and people around us, and frantically searching for the gorilla who he had a fascination/fear thing going with. suddenly he got super excited, pointed up toward the ceiling at a giant bud light cutout and yelled, "BEER!" (sounds more like "bee-a" but you get the point). for some reason this was so great, he yelled it about 15 more times. hopefully no one around us was paying too much attention. after the fact, when anyone would ask him if he got to go to a basketball game, his immediate response was to point up and yell, "BEER!"
- lucy has been doing this thing lately, where she suddenly becomes overly and dramatically sad. one day it was because she never gets to see john mcmahon, "i just never get to see johnny because he is always at work when we go to mimi's and i just love johnny." another day it was over wanting a little sister, "i keep getting older and older and i just need a girl who is three when i am five and i just only want a girl sister because i love girls..." and the other night when pete was putting lucy to bed, "but i don't have anyone to sleep with me." to which he replied, "jack sleeps right next to you." apparently this wasn't good enough. "but i want to sleep in your bed, because you and mom get to sleep next to each other and your bed is a square and i love square beds. i just love sleeping on squares."
- lucy was talking about someday when she is in kindergarten in mrs. hundelt's class. she got very excited and said, "maybe GG will even take me unicorn shopping!" possibly referring to the fact that GG took jack "uniform" shopping, but i guess with lucy you never know...
- jack was playing his cars computer game with pete and missed something, to which he responded, "oh, crab!"
- and last, lucy's most recent prayer intention, "for people who don't have money, so they can get money... and a wallet... a new wallet... that they really like."

jimmy's birthday

my sister mary and jack had been very seriously planning jimmy's birthday for the few weeks leading up to it. on the morning of the party, we were sitting on the couch and jack turned to me and said, "we have so much to do to get ready for jimmy's party tonight." his eyes just about bugged out of his head when i told him the party was actually in the morning... "mom, we have so much to do. seriously, mom. we have to cut more leaves, make the vines, hang the vines, hang all the monkeys, finish the palm tree, move all the furniture on the porch to make it look like a jungle..." (the party had a monkey/jungle theme). i have never seen jack so serious about something or so on a mission to get it done. he worked all morning helping set up, even to the point that when a neighbor kid stopped by to ask if he wanted to play he immediately said, "no, i have to work," without even giving it a second thought. needless to say, it all looked great and jack was very proud of his work. our porch is still currently a jungle as a matter of fact. how much longer it will be has yet to be determined...

oh, and jimmy obviously enjoyed his cake.

loving siblings... sometimes

doesn't it seem like as soon as you are getting really frustrated with your kids and they seem like they can't get along for more than ten minutes, they go and do something really sweet. last week, i was starting to feel just this way about jack and lucy. they couldn't seem to play without arguing, whining, hogging, tattling.... you get the point. anyway, lucy had her little abc school and came home with two packs of gummy lifesavers. she was very excited that she had one for herself and one for jack. how sweet that she thought of him, i thought to myself. we went to pick jack up from school and he came running out, excited to show lucy that he had picked something out of the treasure chest just for her that day. what are the chances they would both think of each other on the same day? i guess God is always there to reassure you right when you are about to lose hope... if only they could always be so kind to each other. if anyone out there has older kids who are still kind, loving and sweet to one another, i would very much like to pick your brain...

craft night or dork night?

so christine and i finally planned a craft night which we combined with a family sleepover. after delicious appetizers (i think finn ate half the hummus by himself... "mo dip"), pizza and some wine we put the kids to bed in ed and christine's guest room (lucy actually slept in ruby's old crib) and busted out the sewing machines. pete and ed hung out on the patio and drank and attempted to discover who had the craziest stories... how is it that guys can talk about themselves all night? anyway, christine and i had long since been talking about trying to make these cute little rag dolls that we found online, so we finally got to it. they came out ok considering it was a first try...

thanks christine and ed for a fabulous night. oh, and the kids had fun, too. they were all so excited in the morning... even ruby was practically jumping out of her jammies with excitement at all the kids still being there in the morning. i am now a major advocate for family sleepovers! of course, pete had to refer to it as "dork night"...

finn's "picture smile"

not really sure where this came from, but today finn started making this face for the camera...

finn is suddenly such a goofball. he totally hams it up for people and will do just about anything to make jack and lucy laugh (even so far as banging his head against the wall... if they think its funny, it must be funny...) he is trying so hard to talk these days and will mimic just about anything you say... the difficult part is when he tries to tell you something out of context... "da" when you are talking about dogs makes sense. however, at any other random time "da" could mean a million things... it's a frustrating stage of life. speaking of dogs, go dog, go is currently finn's favorite book. i think i seriously read that book about 30 times today and that is not counting the number of times jack, pete and my dad also read it to finn... it sure is a fun age, though. while i am on the subject of finn (and since this is supposed to be a pseudo journal for our kids) i will just throw out there that his favorite song of the moment is twinkle, twinkle little star (hand movements included), he is obsessed with cars (from the movie cars, most specifically mac) and recently also nemo, he likes any food he can "dip" into something else, and he enjoys slow walks on the beach and kenny g... well except for those last two...

afternoon coffee

this afternoon i was starting to drag a little, so i decided to make myself some coffee. i then felt inspired to make some scones, which then lead to an all out tea party. it is good to be secure enough as a guy to have a tea party with pink plates...

shamrock farms

last week i went with jack's school on a field trip to shamrock farms. finn went along and lucy had a play-day with her aunt erin. we took two other boys from jack's class in our car for the hour drive. the conversation ranged from the movie cars to star wars, super heroes to halloween costumes, and my personal favorite a brief tutorial on how to make a toot noise in your armpit. good times. the field trip was very fun and i think finn may have had the best day ever. he loved the cows (especially getting to pet and feed the babies), he was somewhat of the class mascot (all the girls kept fighting over holding him, sitting next to him, holding his hand, giving him hugs, etc.) and at the end of the tour they gave everyone a chocolate milk... finn is now a chocolate milk monster...

creepcakes

so, i know i said no more halloween pictures, but we made these on halloween and had a lot of fun, so i just wanted to share them... thank you, martha stewart.

"HIII-EEE!!!"

is it ok to be obsessed with your own kids?

all saints' celebration

vdm has an all saints' day celebration every year in which all the kids dress up as saints and give their speeches in front of the whole school. i was amazed and impressed at the fact that the entire kindergarten class was able to do this. some kids (including jack) spoke to the ground instead of the audience and one little boy temporarily froze (he paused, looked around, then yelled, "uh, i'm stuck!" before quickly composing himself and doing an excellent job), but they all did it and were so cute. why is it so funny to see little girls dressed as nuns? my favorite costume was probably the superman with fake muscles wearing a knights' chest plate and real wings for st. michael... good stuff. jack's favorite was a third grader who was st. sebastian with arrows sticking out of his chest. jack was st. peter, which his dad also was in kindergarten at st. thomas... we will have to try and dig up one of those pictures... jack's pose in these pictures is apparently from a picture in one of our saints books...

lucy's "abc school"

allie and i signed lucy and audrey up for a parks and rec class called alphabet soup. the entire month leading up to the first class on october 27th, going to "school" was all lucy could talk about. on their first day they had a halloween party, so all the kids came dressed up in costumes. lucy went as princess leia and was hoping audrey would go as darth vader so she could "scare all the kids" in their class. audrey opted for yoda instead (possibly by allie's prompting since audrey also told me she wanted to scare her teacher as darth vader...) my favorite moment was when this little 3 year old boy started talking to me about how he was count dracula and when he noticed audrey he gave her a little head nod and said, "master yoda. nice." lucy agreed to pose for a picture for me, one with her backpack on both shoulders the other on just one shoulder because, "that's how some of the kids at jackie's school do it." kids are way too observant. the highlight of the class so far for lucy was that they were given "homework" (a cut-out turkey to decorate and bring back). she was so proud to sit at the kitchen table with jack working on their homework together.
