canal hecklers?

jack and lucy for some reason love playing a game where they stand in the fort part of our swing set and yell "hi" to people running by on the canal. anytime someone says hi back they cheer, this seeming to be the point of the game - to get people to respond. so, when luke and charlotte were over this weekend they were all up there yelling hi to all the early sunday morning joggers, cheering whenever they got a hello back. this game, however, quickly developed into luke and lucy attempting to tease the joggers as they passed by. it started with luke saying to one guy, "you don't have a shir-irt!" and lucy followed up with, "eewww, you have hairy on you!" uh, oh. we should probably put a stop to this... before we did, they got one last one in. lucy yelled, "you skinny, you have skinny legs!" to which luke added, "yeah, toothpick!" (we can thank grandad for that one). so, if you are thinking of taking a jog on the canal between 48th and 44th street, beware of possible canal hecklers...

seriously, this kid...

i always have way to much fun with my camera and luke burch...

slumber party

poor finn kept running down the hall and jumping in bed with these guys, wanting to be part of the big kids slumber party. i would have let him lay in there, but after two minutes of laying still he would start crawling all over everyone. they, of course, thought this was hysterical. the giggles were not so conducive to sleep, however, so sad little finn had to leave...

st. luke's feast day

saturday, october 18th
happy feast day, luke burch!

my sister mary told us that in her husband's family they celebrate the feast days by calling them your name day and sing "happy name day to you..." so we took on this tradition and all sang to luke and celebrated with cookies and ice cream.

george and finn

these two little cousins had a lot of fun playing together on saturday...

roosevelt row

saturday we went down to the roosevelt street vendors' fair with the kids to help support our favorite local breakfast spot... palatte. although it was a tad warm, and the vendors (other than palatte and urban cookies, of course) were not all that exciting, the kids definitely had a blast. the highlights being the jumpy castle and painting t-shirts. my personal highlight being the delicious butternut squash soup from palatte.

oh and finn had his first lollipop which caused an even greater amount of drool to run down his arm. he had the death grip on that thing so much so that when he fell down he tried to catch himself on his forearm, which, of course, was covered in drool. nice sticky purple drool. so he added dirt and tiny pebbles to that mess. he looked like he hadn't bathed in weeks. when we finally unlocked his grip on the now soggy stick he was trying to eat, his hand was stained purple and was completely pruney, as if it had been soaked in a bucket of water for an hour. needless to say, finn thought the festival was insanely fun...

and, of course, ruby was there as well looking cute as always. i am not sure who gets more excited to see her, the kids or pete... christine and ed better watch out because pete might actually eat ruby one of these days...

for split second i looked up and couldn't see finn and nearly almost had a panic attack that he was gone, but luckily he was just hiding under the table... probably so no one would take his lollipop.

bacon and eggs

just a fun little activity to do with the kids for snack if you are ever feeling adventurous...
what you need:
pretzel sticks
white chocolate
yellow m&m's
what you do:
melt chocolate, then pour over two pretzel sticks and push yellow m&m ("m" side down) into chocolate. place on wax paper and put in fridge for 2-5 minutes. the end.
my kids loved it...

scenic and set designer, jack

jack has been helping his aunt mary plan jimmy's first birthday party (and loving every minute of it - "this is the most fun ever!") which happens to be a jungle theme. he has been very into the decorations being perfect and having lots of props. jack dug up the few monkey stuffed animals we have and suggested we get some more, "you just go to the store and they're on the monkey aisle." i love how kids find everything in life to be so simple...

thank you, laurie

so, we came home the other day to find a mysterious pink box sitting on the hood of pete's car...

we opened it to discover...

Hippo Cookies!

finn, needless to say, was quite pleased with his first taste of a hippo cookie...

hurray for hippo cookies!!

you never know what you're going to find...

almost everyday that i go to check on lucy to see if she's asleep, what i find makes me giggle... sometimes i just can't resist taking a picture...

we miss you, phoenix burches!

peter, raph, charlotte, luke and george,
your cousins miss you!

and yes, i swear i do brush lucy's hair...

Happy Birthday, Grandpa Burch!

we had grandpa burch over for dinner last night, so the kids made a cake and cupcakes for his birthday. i don't think finn stopped saying the word "cake" from about 4:30 until we finally ate it at 7:00. he obviously didn't mess around when it finally came time to dig in...

"handy downs"

when jack was little he used to call "hand-me-down" clothes from his cousins "handy-downs". tonight lucy and finn both received "handy-down" pajamas that used to be jack's. jack, however, was very disappointed that there was no one to pass down old jammies to him. oh, well. it can't be that hard always getting new pajamas that actually still have working elastic in the waistband... anyway, we had a good laugh cheering finn on as he ran around the room to jack and lucy calling him "finncredible"...

can you find lucy?

i went to check on lucy today at nap time to see if she had fallen asleep and this is what i found...

oh, and yes, she was sound asleep.

the way to finn's heart... books

finn's newest obsession is reading books by himself. he has been really into books for a while now and will definitely take anyone up on reading him one (poor jack has read him hop on pop probably 50 times), but all of a sudden he loves to climb up on the couch or cozy up on the bean bag and make up his own crazy stories all by himself. i found him earlier today reading on the couch and cracking up laughing all alone at some old disney book and couldn't resist taking his picture. right now he is laying on his belly on the floor reading a book...

playing mass

on saturday jack and lucy decided to play mass. jack's reading was the story of daniel and the lion's den. i overheard him "reading" to lucy (and the rest of the congregation) and the part i caught went like this: "first he heard a growl, 'grrrr' then he heard the loudest roar ever, 'rrrrroarrr!!!!'" what an enthusiastic preacher. and lucy periodically throughout the mass took her baby to the back of the room to be rocked...

first fridays de octobre

this month pete and i headed down to first fridays at palatte with all the kids for their masquerade-themed night of fun. they had art, vendors, live music, wine and beer, yummy treats and goodie bags for the kids. oh yes, and also a pumpkin patch...
finn even managed some orange drool for the occasion (perhaps from an orange skittle...)

ruby and christine...

finn with his super-cool hat from raph (get your kid one like it today!)

g.g. and lulu, beautiful in white...

jack and goose...

finn decided to make up a game of sliding down the pumpkins. each time a delayed "wheeee!" would follow...

lucy felt inspired by the art work to have a serious moment...

and everyone got into the masquerading fun...

sweet secrets

i know this blog is supposed to be all about the kids, but the other night my sister mary and i came across these and we had to post them (mostly for our sister erin)... so, does anyone remember sweet secrets? the best we can guess they were supposed to be transformers for girls, you know things that girls would like such as a telephone that turns into a baby nursery with creepy little jewel bellied babies, but it definitely seems that someone was scraping the bottom of the barrel in creating these toys. i guess it worked though, because i remember being quite envious of a friend who had lots of them. i can now see why our own mom must have avoided them... really, you want to play with that? anyway, we still managed to have one or two little jewel bellied people, so seeing these brought back some memories and i wanted to share. i think the one with the missing pigtail might actually be ours...

St. Therese

Happy Feast Day!
(especially to therese burch!)

a sweet quote jack brought home from school today...
"Because I was small and weak, Jesus stooped down to me and in secret taught me the marvels of His love."

st. patrick teaches swim lessons?

so, to continue with lucy's word mix-ups i thought i would add this little story... tonight at swim lessons lucy started a new class as well as a new teacher, who happens to be a boy named patrick. she has been stressed about this all week and tonight walking into the pool she said, "i don't want a boy. i just like girl teachers." needless to say, she warmed up right away. after swim she was telling pete how funny it is when "st. patrick" spits water out of his mouth and continued telling jack all about her swim lesson with st. patrick. i wonder if we should correct her?

a flashlight in my eye?

lucy is infamous for not only saying things wrong (the wizard of boz), but for saying actual words in the wrong place. today she was complaining that her eye hurt and asked me to look and see if there was "a flashlight" in it. turns out she was trying to think of the word eyelash. close enough.
